PERSONALITY: “My Dad’s back is big and warm. When you’re a kid, you can’t out distance your father’s back. But I wanted to reach and get close to it! As close as I could! That’s why… I’ve always done my best!” In only a few sentences Masaru basically spells out most of the cause of his entire outlook on life. When his father left home to explore the Digital World when Masaru was 4 he told him that he was a grown man now, and he was responsible for his mother and baby sister. That simple declaration colors everything he did for the next 10 years of his life.

Masaru is, on the surface, a loud mouthed, hotheaded punk with no respect for others and nothing but a desire to cause as much trouble as possible. But while he can be loud and hotheaded, the rest couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality Masaru is a loyal, devoted young man… even if he doesn’t always go about it the right way. He does have an awful temper and can be very aggressive. But this is simply because he is a very emotionally open person. When Masaru is angry he’s outright enraged. When he’s happy he’s everyone’s friend. When he’s upset he’s a bawling screaming mess. He feels everything to the extreme and with complete honesty. His parents raised him to be honest with himself and others when it came to the important things, and it shows in his occasionally crass but very powerful sense of pride and honor. He can’t abide anyone going for the easy way out, or not acting like ‘a true man’, which really has nothing to do with masculinity and everything to do with doing what you know is right, no matter what the cost. He’s a man of action, not words, often ‘speaking’ through his fists when words take too long or can’t reach someone.

But even with the best intent, he’s not an easy person to get along with. He picks fights for fun (not out of a need to hurt people, but to compare his strength to theirs.), bickers with everyone around him and is overall an annoying teenage boy. He’s extremely competitive, and if defeated tends to sulk and brood like a spoiled brat. He’s not the best at planning by far, and doesn’t think ahead, though he’s not stupid. In fact he understands emotions very well, rallying others and encouraging his friends with his blunt but usually right observations.

Overall, Masaru is a family oriented person, though ‘family’ doesn’t necessary mean blood. Through out the series he ‘adopts’ quite a few people, especially Agumon and Ikuto, who he treats like little brothers… including bickering and yelling at them pretty often. Yoshino becomes like an Big Sister to him, and even Touma is almost a sibling-like friendly rival… most of the time. Masaru holds all his closest friends on the level of family, and will do anything for them… including bashing their heads if he thinks they need it. He takes his ‘family’s’ safety and happiness as his own personal responsibility, and while he’ll never be sweet and sugary towards them, god forbid anyone else try to hurt them. And because of this, he sees no greater sin then betrayal. If someone he trusted turned their back on him it would be almost impossible for Masaru to forgive them… and his rage would be horrible. During his canon he even makes a real honest attempt to kill someone who he thought had turned against him, screaming for their blood.

But perhaps Masaru’s most glaring and obvious trait is his often idiotic, maybe even suicidal inability to back down. He throws himself against challenges no one should be able to surpass… and does so any way. Part of it’s skill, perhaps. But mostly it’s pure blind determination. Masaru doesn’t understand ‘can not’ for the most part. If he falls, he just gets back up and does it again, even to the point of certain death. While this might be seen as a good trait… it can also lead to all sorts of trouble. But regardless, it’s really the core of who he is. Untamable and unstoppable.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Enhanced Strength and Enhanced Durability. At his current mutation strength Masaru can stop and lift a car or small truck or jump much higher then a normal human. Over time this may increase with training but he will never go beyond a few tons. His enhanced durability is mostly focused on blunt damage- mainly so he doesn't break his own bones using his strength. When it comes to energy attacks or super human level attacks he is not really any more resistant to damage. So while he might survive getting knocked through a building he won't get out of it unscathed.

AU HISTORY: Masaru was born in Japan to a... somewhat normal family. Sure, his father was a famous and ingenius scientist researching travel to other worlds for the government, but he really didn’t take that kinda work home with him so little Masaru really had no idea about it. To him him dad was just this awesome guy that occasionally worked weird long hours with men in black suits and sometimes bullies around the neighborhood yelled at him about because he was, as his mother explained, “born a little different”.

Things changed when Masaru was 4. Suguru was leaving for work. Only for a few weeks, but there was a charge in the air even a little kid could feel. It was somewhere dangerous, but at the time Masaru had no idea. Just that his father took him aside and gave him the pendent he wore everywhere and told his son that it was the ‘sign of a grown man’ and that he needed to take care of his mother and baby sister while his father was gone. Like all little kids Masaru took this completely to heart and waved as his father left, fully expecting him to return like he always did.

He never did.

Eventually his mother moved their little family to the US, their needs covered comfortably by whoever his father had been working for. Maybe out of guilt, maybe out of whatever contract Suguru had signed up with that covered his little family’s wellbeing just in case. Either way his disappearance affected Masaru deeply. The last thing he sad was that Masaru was a man now, and he latched onto that idea, and it mixed with the heartbreak of a lost parent and the rage at those that taunted him over his father’s disappearance (after all, no one knew about his government work. So obviously Suguru just... left. Probably with some woman) into a seething ball of complexes ready to blow. And blow they did- as he grew he became a thug and occasional bully, though as part of his patched together belief system on what being a ‘man’ meant he usually only fought with those that could fight back, not those weaker then him. Still, he was a trouble maker and put plenty of other kids in nurses offices during his elemtry school career. The last bit of fuse flared up in middle school though, when his powers manifested and he nearly killed an older boy in a fit of rage.

The attack was the slap to the face Masaru needed to calm down, but his mutation was out and not wanting his family, especially his little sister to suffer because of what he’d done he tried to run away.

...but his mother was a smart woman and still knew a lot of Important People through Suguru, and soon enough the Institute picked him up safely. She let him believe it was totally his idea though. If this was what he needed to grow, then so be it.

SAMPLE

1ST PERSON SAMPLE:

[The camera shows Masaru toweling off his hair outside the Danger Room, looking over heated but pleased with himself]

Man, this thing is pretty cool! It’s nice, getting to fight all the guys I want without getting arrested again. You can’t even tell the difference no matter how hard to you hit them, or have to worry about not hitting buildings or someone’s dog.

[He pauses, looking pensive] It’s not really the same though, I mean even if it FEELS real a man’s heart can tell it’s fake. I don’t get that tingly feeling in my fist when I fight things in there.

[a sigh]
Still good exercise though, i guess.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:

The Institute, when compared to your average public school, was kinda mind blowing. Masaru couldn't help just dumping his stuff in his room without waiting to see who he was rooming with before heading right back out onto the campus. Some kids would be scared in some strange new place full of people that, as far as the evening news and gossiping masses were concerned, could kill him with their minds. But to Masaru it was like a buffet was laid out in front of him and he had no idea where to start shoveling it all in. He went jogging around the campus, peeking into windows and any unlocked building, trying to climb the giant winged statue in the courtyard and following some kid with *wings* of all things for a half an hour before he was caught.

But as the excitement wore off he couldn't help thinking on why he was here. He... wasn't much of a thinker on his best days, but his chest felt heavy with implications. His mom and Chika were still back home while he was off having himself an adventure. Hadn't he promised to look after them no matter what? he had responsibilities as a man, right?

"No. No, you did the right thing!" he told himself aloud, not noticing any weird looks he got for it. "I can't bring Mom any more trouble... I'll just stay here until I get my fists under control." Plus... well there were probably lots of strong guys here he could fight.... fight and not have to worry about hurting. His grin returned and he jumped to his feet, posed and fist up. He was the best fighter around after all, time this school learned that the old fashioned way!
